About the Series
The first anthology installment of the "Where We Belong" series follows the story of Armi Velarde, a lesbian woman living in Atlanta and her journey to freedom through exploring the outdoors.
Armi, an immigrant from the Philippines, has always been proud of who she is and her queerness. But grew up under the repression and homophobia of Catholicism and the nuances of Filipino culture. Upon immigrating to the Unites States, she discovered a whole new world of possibilities, and an environment in Atlanta much more culturally open-minded that beckoned her to explore. Though she yearned to step outside of her comfort zone all that her new surroundings had to offer, her strict upbringing made her fearful of everything and everyone around her, and she remained mostly isolated for nearly a decade.
It wasn't until she discovered a local lesbian/bi hiking group called LesGoHiking that she found the support and inner strength needed to take her first steps towards personal liberation. She discovered a new path forward, one supported by other queer black and brown women in Atlanta, all searching for the community, curiosity and queer camaraderie that this group and the hiking trail had in store ahead.
